Tutors set their own hourly rate. Chalkden takes a share of it, and that share gets smaller the longer a tutor teaches here. There is nothing else to pay, on either side.
Set by each tutor, shown on their profile before you contact anyone. Rates vary by year level and subject.
No membership, no package to buy up front, no minimum number of lessons, no notice period.
Cancel more than 24 hours ahead and there is no charge. Inside 24 hours, half the lesson rate goes to the tutor — they held the time and turned down other work for it. If a tutor cancels, you are never charged.
Payment is authorised when a tutor accepts, and only charged once the lesson has actually happened. You are never charged for a lesson that did not take place.
Commission falls as your hours build, and the rate is stamped onto each booking when it is accepted — a later change to this ladder can never reach back and alter what you were already owed.
| Lifetime hours taught | Commission | You keep | On a $58 lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–49 hours | 20% | 80% | $46.40 |
| 50–199 hours | 16% | 84% | $48.72 |
| 200–499 hours | 14% | 86% | $49.88 |
| 500+ hours | 12% | 88% | $51.04 |
We pay back your Victorian Working with Children Check in full after your 10th completed lesson.
Straight to your bank account, for lessons you have completed. Stripe holds the account details, not us.
If a family cancels inside 24 hours, half the rate goes to you — and we take no commission on it.
It pays for the verification, the payment handling, the matching and the software. We would rather take a smaller share of more lessons than a large share of a few, which is why the ladder goes down rather than up.
