How much does tutoring cost?

Tutors set their own rate. In Melbourne's south-east most sit between $45 and $70 an hour depending on year level and subject. You see the exact rate on the profile before you contact anyone, and there are no booking fees or account fees on top.

Are tutors background checked?

Any tutor teaching someone under 18 must hold a current Victorian Working with Children Check. We verify the number, display it, and monitor the expiry — and the booking system refuses the booking outright if the check is missing, pending or expired. Tutors teaching adults and university students can start before their check comes through.

Have you vetted the tutors yourselves?

No, and we do not claim to. We verify and display the check that the Victorian government issued, confirm a university email address with a one-time code, and have a person review identity documents before a profile goes live. You can confirm any Working with Children Check directly with the Victorian register, and we would rather you did.

Do I have to sign up for a block of lessons?

No. No contracts, no notice periods, no direct debit, no minimum. You book one lesson at a time.

When am I charged?

Payment is authorised when the tutor accepts the booking, and taken once the lesson has actually been completed. You are never charged for a lesson that did not happen.

What if I need to cancel?

Cancel more than 24 hours ahead and there is no charge. Inside 24 hours, half the lesson rate goes to the tutor, who held the time and turned down other work for it. If a tutor cancels, you are never charged.

What if the tutor is not a good fit?

Change tutors whenever you like, at no cost. There is nothing to cancel and nobody to notify.

Can I contact a tutor before booking?

Yes. Messages go through Chalkden, and phone numbers and email addresses stay masked until a booking is accepted.

What commission do you take?

20% to start, falling to 12% once you pass 500 lifetime hours. Your rate is stamped onto each booking when it is accepted, so a later change to the ladder can never alter what you were already owed. The full table is on the pricing page.

Who sets my hourly rate?

You do, per subject, and you can change it whenever you like.

When do I get paid?

Weekly, on Fridays, straight to your bank account, for lessons you have completed. Stripe holds your account details — Chalkden never sees them.

What happens if a student cancels late?

Inside 24 hours, half the lesson rate is yours, and we take no commission on it.

Do I need a Working with Children Check?

To teach anyone under 18, yes — a current Victorian one. We reimburse the $139.20 fee in full after your 10th completed lesson. You can teach adults and university students while yours is being processed.

Am I locked into anything?

No. No exclusivity, no minimum hours, no notice period. Every booking is a request you can decline.

Do I have to write lesson plans?

A diagnostic works out what the student is missing before the first lesson, so you arrive knowing what to teach. At the end, a two-minute wrap-up becomes the written report the parent receives.

When can I start?

We are recruiting the first cohort now for Victorian Term 1, 2027. Booking opens in December 2026. Applying early means your profile is live and aged before the first families arrive.
